Pharmacist: How can I help you?
Mr. Green: Hi, I’m looking for something to ease my bad cough.
Pharmacist: Would you describe the cough as dry or productive?
Mr. Green: You see, I’ve been having a cold recently, and the cough was initially dry but now it’s getting worse: each time I cough I feel pain in my lungs and it sounds horrible. Do you think it might be something serious, like pneumonia or something?
Pharmacist: There is probably nothing to worry about. Phlegm-producing cough is a natural phenomenon in airways infections. I’ll give you an expectorant that helps bring up mucus from the lungs. Get rest for a few days and visit a doctor if the cough doesn’t clear up.
Mr. Green: Thank you.

Mr. Brown: I need a cold medication.
Pharmacist: What symptoms do you have precisely?
Mr. Brown: Oh it’s just for a cough. I do have terrible headaches now and then, but they’re from sinusitis and now this cough came up, I think I’m getting a cold.
Pharmacist: Since you mentioned the sinus problem, I presume the cough may be due to mucus coming down your throat and irritating the mucous membrane.
Mr. Brown: So it’s not a cold?
Pharmacist: If that’s the only symptom then probably not.

Mr. Pollen: Hi. I have been recently diagnosed with allergy, mainly to dust, cats and pollens.
Pharmacist: Do you take anti allergy medications?
Mr. Pollen: Yes, I do, and they’re helping, but the problem is I still have an exhausting dry cough which bothers me.
Pharmacist: That may be a reaction to an allergy inducement such as dust. You should avoid allergens at any cost. I will give you a syrup to help you with the cough.
